Here's
How It's Done!
After you come to the Nursery and
personally select your tree...
GOPHER ONE CALL
We will call Gopher State One Call to have all utility lines
located in your yard so there is no danger of cutting any lines.
After the utility lines have been located, you should place a
stake or flag in the location where you want your trees.
You should stay at least 4 feet away from any utility lines.
The hole that is dug will be almost 7 feet wide.
Gopher One Call will only locate
utility lines. They
will not locate irrigation systems or other private lines. If you have an irrigation system, you need to have that
located, or have an idea of where the lines are so that the tree
spade does not cut them. Minnesota
Valley Garden Center is not responsible for irrigation systems or
unmarked lines that we hit.
SCHEDULING
After you have selected your
tree, we will give you a general time frame of when your tree will
be installed. We cannot
give you an exact date. Our
schedule changes daily depending on weather conditions and other
unforeseen problems. Let us know if you have any scheduling conflicts (on
vacation, away on business, waiting for sod installation, etc…).
We will accommodate you as much as possible.
We will call you two days in
advance to let you know when your tree is coming. We will
usually give you about 2 hour window for when the tree spade will
arrive. We cannot always give you an exact time, because some
jobs go easily and quicker than scheduled, while at other jobs we
may encounter unforeseen problems that will delay us. Please
remember that if it rains in between the time that we notify you and
the time the installation is scheduled that it may delay you
installation, but we will let you know.
INSTALLATION
Steve (our Tree Spade Expert) will come to your house to first
dig the hole where your new tree is to be planted.
The tree spade truck is a very
large vehicle. It is
very likely that the truck could leave depressions in your lawn,
especially if you have an irrigated yard, or it has recently rained.
If you are concerned about ruts in your yard, we can lay down
plywood to drive on for an additional fee.
Steve will then come back to the nursery, to pick up your tree,
and return to your yard and plant your new tree.

CARING FOR YOUR TREE – Proper care is essential for a long
and healthy life for your tree.
One of the most important aspects
for caring for your new tree is a proper moisture level. The
first year is very critical and you should note the plant's
condition often. Check the new growth of your tree for signs of any
problems. A healthy tree should be growing new leaves, even during
hot summer conditions.
Watering is the most important
part of helping your tree to get established. Newly planted trees
must be watered directly into the root ball. Place your hose
near the base of the tree and let it run at a trickle for several
hours. Yellowing of the leaves near the center of the tree is
a warning sign that the tree is stressed and needs more water. Brown
crispy edges on leaves indicate the tree is not taking up enough
water to keep up with its water demands.
Be aware though that
over-watering can be even more harmful to your tree than too little
moisture. If you have clay soil, you must be very cautious of
your watering habits. Watch for the following signs that may
indicate the tree is being over-watered: wilting leaves when
the root ball is moist, no new growth, water stained edges of the
leaves, blackened stems, stunted growth, or overall decline of the
plant.
Mulching trees helps them retain
proper soil moisture. We recommend a 2-4" layer of
organic mulch such as shredded bark, wood chips, cedar, or cocoa
beans.
Feel
free to call us any time with questions or concerns about your
plants. We spent years nurturing them in our nursery and want
them to live for many more providing you shade and beauty.
